There sandbagging in EVERY competition where sandbagging is rewarded. I’ve seen it in chess and tennis. Mediocre 40 year old tennis players who compete in the 3.5 level who are obviously at the 4.0 level. It’s stupid.

MMA seems like the jack of all trades, master of none, and there's no emphasis in it on rituals that garner respect and or etiquette which I don't think is a good combination with bestowing martial arts knowledge, it's also taken from styles without any kind of tip of the hat, often quite the opposite even. I think it's wise to build up sufficient skill in a given style before cross training. I went into Security for 4yrs working in nasty bars with a black belt in Karate and minimal Jui Jitsu/grappling experience. It was an eye opener for sure and working with BJJ and JJJ guys, they certainly helped me appreciate the art a lot more, they taught me the tools i needed for the job tbh. I'd been training my fists, hands, elbows, feet and shins for over a decade for striking and timing/distance ranged fighting and maximum "sociopathic" damage (ripping out larynx etc), whilst striking is basically the one thing you can't do as a bouncer let alone tearing out peoples throats. Luckily, what I lacked in grappling I made up for in being a focused, steady handed, relatable, fair and friendly security guy with good customer service and ultimately everyone's best interests at heart which they could always tell, so most people weren't too hard to talk into compliance. I was also 95% successful in deescalating tenuous situations, often where they're at the height of wanting to kill people or me, i'll calm the shit outa that person without a problem. Takes getting used to the streets and the adrenaline, but often its not all about pretzel'ing people up, its about being a people person.

Been bouncing on and off for 40 years, I am 65 and still bouncing, some tips I can give1- your job is to keep people in the bar spending money, NOT kicking people out.2- Dont walk around trying to look like a badass 3- talk with people , while your working with as many people as you can, this way if there is an issue the fact that they know you helps immensly 4- Deescallation ,dont take sides try explaining how their night can continue if they make good choices 5- while talking to people try complimenting people , like big dudes all jacked , tell the, they look good telling them u know the dedication it takes, you now have an ally.If someone looks like trouble , small talk crack a joke etc .The more relationships you develope the better. In busy bars there are alot of regulars,as you put time in you will know practically everyone.6- Dont assume erratic behavior is always bad, medical conditions etc, its your job to get the facts there is usually someone with them that will explain. Had a person with PTSD once and the DJ lights set him off. Being ex military I talked him down as if I was one of his military buddies and basically told him we were safe we secured this area and the enemy was elimimated . that calmed him down and he got back to being himself in about 20 minutes.7- aggression and fighting does and will happen , dont let it be your first move, remember you job is to keep everyone safe including yourself.8- if its innevitable and someone is coming for you, let them come to you ,talk with your hands up ,let them know you dont want to fight while keeping those hands up and when he enters the strike zone dont miss. most times he will not be ready because you were telling him how u wanted not to fight, while getting in position to fight. Do not go to the ground ,handle issues standing. If you established relationships , you shoild have many allies.

Dude, I am so glad you put this content, and I just bumped into it. You are 100% right. Most people, even the ones that practice and are good at some martial art form, have never been in a real encounter where there are no rules. And what most people fail to understand is that an attacker would likely have lots of experience in violent encounters. Awesome recommendations about cross-training

If by "well evidenced" you mean not a shred of evidence whatsoever, then sure. I mean, its been proven conclusively false, genetically. There isnt a single animal or person anywhere in the world- in any crevice or corner on Earth that posseses genetic information that it did not inherit from its progenitor(s). In order for this scifi to work, new genetic material would have to somehow appear out of nowhere which happens because....... reasons....🤨 And the same magic conjuring of genetic information appearing out of thin air would have to appear in similar variation in multiple separate offsprings of separate families/tribes within that "species" simultaneously, which would happen because...... reasons.... This of course does not happen, has never, and will not ever be observed to any degree at all. If you appreaciate REAL science and the scientific method, thank a Christian because thats where the scientific method comes from🤙🏽 Lets let evolution stay where it thrives best.. Xmen movies🙅

I did boxing and karate for many years and also worked as a bouncer. It all depends on the environment you're in and whether you're dealing with a normal person or a drunk person looking to start trouble. I spent quite a few years in prison, and this is where you see people who don't give a f**k about what will happen to them or whether or not they take your life. They don't fight fair and they don't care about putting 50 holes in you. These are the type of people that are truly dangerous, and to be honest, no training is 100% effective against someone who is stabbing you in the neck when you turn your back. I have witnessed many times really good fighters get completely fucked up and fighting for their life, believing the jail yard was an MMA cage. It's really better to diffuse a situation than to try to KO or choke someone out.

Nice stories, but I have to defend Gracie Combatives. The Combatives is not perfect but it teaches the most comprehensive way for dealing with punches and controlling tactics against someone who is untrained. All the other instructionals out there are not very good. If there is a dvd out there better then let’s post it. I do agree that the knife defense is not the best. Henry Akins shows a little about defending against punches but he gives so little information that it’s not useful..
